PANJIM: Even as the State reports a daily surge in COVID-19 cases, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has ruled out any immediate plans to impose restrictions or a lockdown in the State.

Speaking to media persons after laying the foundation stone for renovation and strengthening work of the Goa Kala Academy, the Chief Minister said that the situation in the neighbouring States is being monitored by the government.
“There is no immediate plan to impose a lockdown or curfew in Goa. We are monitoring the situation in Maharashtra and Karnataka where COVID-19 cases are rising alarmingly,” Sawant said responding to a question.
He said the number of tests in the State have increased. “I admit that there is a surge in cases. The daily cases have touched the 250 mark also. We have increased testing facilities,” he said.
Sawant said that rather than just imposing restrictions, it is for individuals to take a call on their own safety. He said that the people need to adhere to COVID-19 norms strictly so that the outbreak can be tackled.
After reporting a decline in daily cases since November last year, Goa’s tally of new cases saw a surge from March and has continued thereafter.
As on Sunday, the State’s active case tally has crossed the 2000 mark and stood at 2077.
