PORVORIM: Sudden unseasonal showers lashed Mapusa town and disrupted normal life on Tuesday.
Most roads in Mapusa were flooded with rainwater, while some uncovered drains had water gushing out with all kinds of garbage and plastic on roads in Mapusa. Huge cracks developed on the main road in front of the Maruti temple.
The compound wall of the Mapusa fire station also collapsed and fingers were being pointed at the excavation of a nearby building under construction, which had loosened the soil.
“My department had written to the MMC complaining about the construction, but in vain. There are moves to evacuate a part of the fire station as the firemen now fear that if rains continued then the building could collapse. The Mapusa Residency, which is opposite the fire station, is also in danger as excavation work has been done quite deep to create parking space,” informed Mapusa Fire station incharge D D Redkar.
Mapusa Councilor Ashish Shirodkar, who visited the site to take stock of the situation, has expressed fears over the safety of the firemen.
Meanwhile, the Mapusa fire station attended to three calls of trees getting uprooted at various places. There were also reports of power cuts in various villages of Bardez.
