PANJIM: The North Goa police arrested 58 thieves and recovered a whopping 148 cellphones mostly high-end between December 25 and 31, which are worth over Rs 1.5 core.

Calangute police alone have arrested 31 accused persons who were involved in theft of 116 cellphones. The thieves arrested by North Goa police stations are mostly natives of Mumbai, Delhi, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh (UP).
The Calangute police on December 25, arrested one person and recovered a cellphone. On December 29, 12 persons were arrested and 41 cellphones were recovered. On December 30, five arrests were made and 12 cellphones were recovered. On December 31 and January 1, 13 persons were in the police net for stealing 62 high-end cellphones from tourists.
North Goa Superintendent of Police Nidhin Valsan said, “Our personnel have done a commendable job in detecting the crimes. The investigation in the cases is underway. The cellphones will presently remain as case property and will be given back to its original owners after the court orders.”
Sources informed the cellphones are usually sold overseas by methods similar to drug trafficking. Thriving markets of robbed cellphones in Bengaluru and Mumbai too are min black markets, where these cellphones land up in.
