Lopes joined Doordarshan Kendra in 1992 as a Transmission Executive and was later promoted as programme executive in 2005. Before joining Doordarshan, Lopes worked for Herald Publications.
He was also the vice president of Dalgado Konkani Academy, founder member of the Romi Lipi Action Front and was in the fore front in the movements to spread and recognize Konkani.
Lopes instituted and enhanced an award under the Chinchinim Jaycees for the student of Chinchinim schools standing first at the SSCE in the subject of Konkani He represented his college and Goa in football at the National School Games at Guwahati, Assam in 1979. He was also active in promoting Cricket at Chinchinim.
Meanwhile, condolence messages have been pouring in from all over the State.
He is survived by his wife and two sons.
His funeral will be held in Chinchinim on February 24, at 4 pm.
