MARGAO/VASCO: Around 14 fishermen aboard a motorised canoe were rescued after the vessel capsized off the Colva coast around Saturday noon.
Life guards posted at Colva informed that the incident occurred around noon when the motorised canoe, with 11 crew members, set sail from Vasco and was heading towards the Colva coast when it capsized. The crew members were later rescued by a fishing vessel which was fishing close to the site.
A lifeguard said they were informed of the incident around noon and the canoe is believed to be still stranded in the sea. “All the crew members aboard the motorised canoe were rescued by a mechanised fishing vessel,” the life guard informed.
Incidentally, this is the sixth incident wherein a motorised canoe has capsized off the Salcete coast since Sunday. While four canoes had capsized at Benaulim and Colva last Sunday, another canoe had capsized off Mobor coast, wherein the crew members were rescued by the lifeguard and a coast guard helicopter.
According to reports the canoe belonging to Abdul Sheik had set sail from Khariwaddo jetty at 10.30 am. The incident occurred 16 nautical miles off Colva when the canoe, which was loaded with fish, got caught in the rough sea.
“The trawler, R Marline, belonging to Anton Carvalho of Khariwada, which was also fishing at Colva managed to rescue all the fishermen and brought them to safety,” Sheik told Herald.
“However, the canoe along with the net, two outboard motors and the catch sank in the sea,” Sheik said and estimated the loss of property at Rs 9 lakh.
