PANJIM: In a sudden turnaround, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on Friday claimed victory in the Goa University Students Council election, almost 23 days after the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the Congress student wing had claimed the same.
On October 30, when the results were declared, NSUI Goa President Ahraz Mulla had said that NSUI Goa won 75 per cent of the university class representative (UCR) and university faculty representative (UFR) seats and that candidates backed by them had emerged winners.
He said that the nominations filed by BJYM were rejected by the University for their failure to submit expenditure certificates.
However, on Friday, BJYM held a victory rally in Panjim announcing they had clinched the GU students’ council unopposed.
Speaking to Herald, BJYM general secretary Gajanan Tilve said their nominations had not been rejected but had been kept on hold. “On the day of filing nominations, the officer in charge was on leave and hence, the expenditure certificates could not be submitted,” he said.
“We then approached university chancellor Governor Dr Mridula Sinha with an appeal to grant permission for filing fresh nominations. Accordingly, after holding a detailed meeting, the University announced re-process of filing nominations and all the URCs were appealed to file nominations,” he added.
Tilve said the only nominations filed were by BJYM and hence they were elected unopposed. The elections were for nine posts – chairman, general secretary and seven executive members. NSUI has alleged political pressure and has decided to move the court against the election process.
