MARGAO: After being pulled up by the Bombay High Court at Goa, the Margao Municipal Council, following a joint meeting with the Goa Waste Management Corporation has initiated an action plan and pledged to get rid of the mess at Sonsoddo dump yard within the next six months.
On Friday, a team led by Chief Officer Rohit Kadam and Acting Chairperson Dipali Sawal, along with concerned engineers inspected the Sonsodo site and set a target of six months to resolve the issue, as the MMC has to file a necessary compliance report before the High Court at the earliest.

The GWMC had decided to re-start the remediation work of the legacy dump in the first or second week of October. However, the civic body has to figure out a way to resolve the issues pertaining to leachate flowing into the drains and to expedite the process of RDF (refuse-derived fuel), which has grown into a hill at the site.
Acting Chairperson Sawal said, “MMC will remove all the leachate from the tanks, especially those built to collect the same. The work could not be taken up due to the rains, but will be removed from the tanks once the rains stop.”
Admitting that the civic body was facing a tough time with regard to refuse derived fuel (RDF), Sawal said the cement factory had stopped accepting the same for some time. “However, the process has started and all the RDF dumped here will be transported to the cement factory at the earliest. The blocked road due to the huge RDF pile will be cleared,” said Sawal.
