Announces Arabic course

Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro on Wednesday said those going abroad should know it was important to stay connected to their roots and if anyone believed he or she could stay without this link then it was very sad.
Faleiro was speaking at a press conference to announce the 3rd Know Goa Programme for youth, students and professionals of Goan origin in the age group of 18 to 28 years from November 28 to December 12, this year.
He informed the last date for receiving applications for participation in the programme, fully funded by the State government, was on or before November 1, 2010. “Details are also available on www.globalgoans.org.in,” he mentioned.
He said the programme was open to those who have distinguished themselves in their field of activity and shown abiding interest in Goa and India.
Making a point on migration, he observed, “Today we are experiencing reverse migration and in Goa one can see Europeans and Americans coming to work here. Goans are also going abroad for better living conditions and lucrative job prospects.”
Arabic course: Faleiro announced those Goans seeking jobs in the Gulf countries will now be able to avail the opportunity of learning Arabic in a two-week workshop from October 4, 2010. “The workshop for which a fee of Rs 500 will be charged per participant is scheduled to be conducted at the Caritas Goa Holiday Home, St Inez, here, from 5 pm to 7 pm, daily from Monday to Friday,” he informed.
He observed that job seekers will have an added advantage after learning Arabic as they will possess better communication skills during interviews. Besides job seekers, those into international businesses related to oil, travel and finance also stand to benefit from knowing the language, he stated adding, “Arabic is spoken in 24 countries from North Africa to Middle East and beyond.”
The Overseas Employment Agency of the State Government will conduct the two-week course.
Scholarship Programme: Faleiro informed that applications for the ‘Goa Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children’ have to reach the Director of Higher Education, Government of Goa, on or before October 20, 2010.

The scholarship is meant for non-resident Goan students who wish to pursue studies in institutions affiliated to Goa University or the Goa Board of Technical Education.
Scholarships to the extent of Rs 40,000 per year will be disbursed under this scheme to four selected students in the age group of 17 to 21 years.
