MARGAO: The NSS volunteers of the city colleges lent a helping hand to the Margao Municipal Council struggling to keep the door-to-door waste collection project going in Margao jurisdiction.
Around 200 NSS volunteers drawn from Damodar College, Chowgule Higher Secondary and College, Government Commerce College Borda and Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, participated and assisted in the distribution of the bins.
At the end of the day, the volunteers visited 40 complexes/colonies and distributed around 3460 bins to 1730 units. Around 760 flats could not be handed over the bins as they were found locked.
The Solid Waste Management cell of Margao Municipal Council held a special campaign to distribute household bins to 40 housing complexes/colonies spread across Margao, with the help of NSS volunteers as the civic body has been facing hardships in the distribution of bins to the households due to the absence of qualified workers to record the details of the people who are given bins.
The programme started after the flag hoisting ceremony at the Margao Municipal Council, when SWMC member and former MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho briefed the NSS volunteers how they should collect the details of the households on special sheets provided to them. K Sangeeta, Andrew Antao, Yatin P Desai and Ashok Patil, all in-charges of the NSS unit guided the volunteers. Chief Officer Narayan Sawant and Chairperson Gonzago Rebello flagged of the campaign after the volunteers sang the Hum Honge Kamiyab song. Sanitary Inspectors Viraj Arabekar and Sanjay Sanguelkar and SWMC member Dr Gunaji Desai coordinated the campaign.
Vice Chairperson Dhananjay Mayekar, councillors Avinash Shirodkar, Rosy Pereira, Carmin Rodrigues, Raju Naik, Pratima Coutinho and others were present.
