VASCO: The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) will undertake a mega clean-up drive on five beaches of Goa on September 17, on the occasion of International Coastal Clean-up Day.
The event will be part of a National Clean-up drive organised by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Union Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Indian Coast Guard, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) along with other social organisations and educational institutions in 75 beaches across the country. Addressing a press conference at Mormugao, Dr V Sakthivel Samy, Scientist from NCPOR said that various stakeholders from both, the Union and the State governments will be involved in the clean-up drive simultaneously at Baina, Bogmalo, Velsao, Colva and Miramar beaches. Students and local fishermen will also participate in the programme from 7.30 am to noon.
“We will create a beach cleaning awareness programme and also collect thrash and garbage on the beach and we will segregate it and hand it over to Coast Guard, who in turn will give it to Indian Oil Corporation,” Samy said.
According to Samy, the awareness programme is to sensitise locals not to dirty the beautiful beaches along the coastline. The local village panchayats will also participate in this collective programme.
