MARGAO: The South Goa Additional District and Sessions Judge on Tuesday sentenced Premand Shetye, 29, of Udupi, Kanataka, to undergo seven years rigorous imprisonment in a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The accused was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 and in default undergo one-year simple imprisonment. The amount, if paid by accused, will go to the family of the deceased Ganapati Ambig, 35. The period the accused has been in custody will be set aside in the sentence. The Cuncolim police PI Raju Raut Desai who had investigated the case had chargesheeted Shetye under sections 302 and 323 of IPC for murder and assault. The court later commuted the offence to section 304 (a) IPC culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The prosecution represented by Asha Arsekar had examined seven witnesses in support of its case, including eye witness Shikant Shail, tandel employed on the trawler.
