SANGUEM: Former councillors and chairpersons of Sanguem Municipal Council to object to the construction of a children’s park in front of Our Lady of Miracles Church, Sanguem.
They have demanded that the children’s park be constructed opposite Sanguem BJP office where the municipality, they said, has a vast open land.
In a press note, they pointed out that there never existed a Children’s Park in front of the Sanguem Church but the equipments for the play area were provided by late Bolwin Coutinho who served as administrator of Sanguem Municipal Council way back in 1990-1992.
The open area was always used by the Church authorities for conducting religious functions, they said.
They further pointed out that the play area being adjacent to the road, it is subject to road widening, as such, spending funds on the construction of Children’s Park in front of the Church would be a colossal waste.
“Certain vested interests are out to create communal tensions in the town area where till date people from all faiths have lived in peace,” the press note reads as.
The press release was signed by former councillor Minguel Mascarenhas, ex-chairperson John D’Costa and Jose Fernandes and the senior citizens from Sanguem.
They also criticized the role of Amar Naik who triggered the issue of children’s Park in Sanguem. Mascarenhas and Fernandes demanded to know the stand of Amar Naik who otherwise hails from Kalay village to propose the construction of children’s park in front of the Sanguem church.
Criticisms were also leveled against Amar Naik for issuing a press note. wherein he had passed rumours of certain members of Catholic community for defaming his name in the locality.
Meanwhile, Jose Fernandes and John D’Costa applauded the seven councillors who have opposed the construction of children’s park at Sanguem. They castigated Chairperson Suryadatt Naik and Councillor Sanjay Raikar for supporting the move to construct the park in front of the church.
Senior citizens Joaquim D’Costa and Custodio Fernandes also objected the construction of children’s park in front of the Sanguem Church as, they said, it would harm the conduct of day to day religious activities in the area.
