The HRGA has alleged that there are more than 10 quacks and fake doctors in Goa and neither the Medical Council Goa nor the police have been able to stop the life threatening activity. The wife of the recently arrested quack Sunil Chavan has become a whistleblower in this case and has written a letter as to how this quack came into existence and has been missing the clutches of law. The NGOs have demanded that the wife’s letter be considered as a proof and a strong case be built to prevent the perpetrator from being released.
The fake doctor who was arrested on Wednesday by Margao Town Police has been granted bail however he is in judicial custody due to failure to produce some important documents. The HRGA and Bailancho Ekvott claims that this quack has cheated many people including some of the most top of the line political leaders of Margao, Panjim and Mapusa too. Now, the wife of the doctor Sunil Chavan has written a letter to one of her friend in Goa and has revealed how she was threatened by the quack when he was advised to stop the fake business.
“The quack has a female accomplice who has been with him for years and also two nephews who are partnering him in this cheating business. The police need to nab these people and take them to task too” said Auda Viegas.
“The perpetrator has to be booked and chargesheeted and a strong case have to be made against him so that no more people are put in trouble,” said Advocate D’Souza. The NGOs also demanded strengthening of the Medical Council Goa to combat against these quacks. Recently volunteers of GOACAN armed with black flags and placards held an hour long protest in front of the Margao Branch of the Punjab National Bank for its support to the fake doctor Sunil Chavan. Acting on a tip off the NGO found that fake doctor Sunil Chauvan was using the Bank premises to lure customers to visit his clinics by displaying a banner that stated “in association with Punjab National Bank Margao branch” a special scheme for loyal Bank customers offering a one hour free treatment at his Navelim & Aquem Centers.
The NGO filed a complaint with Police Inspector C.L. Patil of Margao Police Station stating that the qualifications Ph.D (A.M) mentioned in the leaflets & poster were suspicious and requested immediate action. GOACAN then sought clarifications on the qualification & registration of Sunil Chauvan from the Directorate of Health Services, Goa Medical Council and Goa Board of Indian System of Medicine and Homoeopathy who replied that such qualifications were not recognized and that Sunil Chauvan was not a registered medical practitioner.
On providing this information to the Margao Police Station, Sunil Chauvan was arrested on Saturday 22nd August under sections 420, 419, 468 & 471 of the IPC.
