CANACONA: Minister for Fisheries Vinod Palyekar and local MLA Isidore Fernandes inaugurated harvesting of fish reared in reservoir cage culture at Chapolim dam in Canacona on Thursday.
The reservoir cage culture to rear Pangasius Sutchi locally called Basa, a fresh water fish variety is undertaken under Rashtriya Krushi Vikas Yozna in cages at Chapolim dam.
The total area under cage culture is 1100 sq mts accommodating 48 cages. The rearing was started seven months ago with fingerlings procured from Andhra Pradesh and the harvested fish will weigh about 1 kg fetching a price of around Rs 60 per kg in the wholesale markets.
