PERNEM: The TCP Department officials inspected a site at Askawada, Mandrem following a complaint by Mandrem panch alleging illegal mining activities.
The inspection comes a week after the Pernem police stopped hill cutting activity and laterite stone quarrying at Askawada Mandrem. During the inspection it was revealed that the owner had obtained permission from Mines department for quarrying an area of 10,000 sq mts however, the area quarried was almost 20,000 sq mts.
Sources informed that the owner one Anthony Nadan had allegedly flattened the area by setting fire to a cashew plantation and by uprooting trees. Quarrying has been going since the last 7 years.
The complainant Hadfadkar, a panch of Mandrem Panchayat has forwarded his complaint copy to the Mines Department, Mamlatdar, Deputy Collector and Collector. The locals have threatened to approach the court if any of these government authorities fail to take action.
