VASCO: The Swachh Bharat Mission Committee of Mormugao Taluka (SBMCMT) has now set October 2 as final deadline to make Vasco garbage free.
This was decided at review meeting held at the Ravindra Bhavan, Vasco on Wednesday, which was attended by various stakeholders. It may be recalled that the committee on February 10, this year had set May 15 as deadline by which the port town would be garbage free. However, due to some shortcomings, the same could not be met and therefore the committee on Thursday called for a review meeting. After taking stock of situation, the committee has now shown full confidence that they would surely achieve the October 2 deadline. The stakeholders including government departments, Mormugao Municipal Council, corporate houses, Central Government agencies, educational institutions, social and religious associations from the taluka would contribute towards the mission of making Vasco garbage free.
At the meeting, which was chaired by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, it was brought to the notice of the members that though the stakeholders, especially the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) had put in all efforts to achieve the target set earlier, however due to non-cooperation by the members of public, the mission could not be accomplished.
Highlighting the core issues, MMC chairperson Deepak Naik informed the members that the Council has been putting in sincere efforts to ensure 100 percent door-to-door garbage collection in all 25 wards. However, in a few wards, people are not cooperating with the municipality.
Earlier, he said, MMC had identified around 1000 dark spots where people used to dump their garbage, despite having the door-to-door garbage scheme in place. He informed that MMC is in need of mini rickshaws and few additional trucks to ensure cent percent door-to-door garbage collection.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida requested the Airport Authority of India, IOC and HP to sponsor one truck each to MMC under CSR. He also requested the Mormugao Port Trust to sponsor a road sweeping machine to MMC.
“Though we were unable to achieve our target of Mission Vasco Garbage Free by May 15, however this time we are confident of achieving our new deadline of October 2,” Almeida told reporters.
