PANJIM: The State capital went dry on Tuesday and Wednesday after a major breakdown at Banastarim-Ponda.
Public Work Department’s water division officials on Wednesday evening said that the repairs will be completed by Thursday morning and supply of water will be normal.
Panjim and surrounding areas in Tiswadi taluka faced a water crisis for two days. However PWD managed to supply some water late Wednesday evening.
Officers said there was a breakdown near Banastarim Bridge on the Ponda side where there was a crack in a joint of the 700 mm diameter pipe which is 10 meters under the ground.
“There was a continuous four-hour welding job which we were able to undertake thanks to the weather. If it had been raining we wouldn’t have been able to complete this work,” a PWD officer said.
The officer added that the breakdown occurred early Tuesday morning and on noticing the fault, work was assigned to rectify it. “We have not yet been able to ascertain the exact technical reason for the breakdown. We gave preference to repairs,” the officer said.
