Panjim market ‘deserted’ as mark of respect to Parrikar

Shops in the capital city shut as a mark of respect to late CM Parrikar

PANJIM: The main municipal market in State capital witnessed a deserted look as shops across the city were shut as a mark of respect to late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who represented Panjim for over two decades since 1994.
18th June Road, which usually bustles with large crowd shopping on the streets and in shops, had pedestrians or motorists trying to navigate through to the BJP office on the Atmaram Borkar Road.
From the early morning until dusk, except for a few eateries on the outskirts such as St Inez and Bhatlem, establishments irrespective of the type of business remained closed.
Market association secretary Dharmendra Bhagat said, “We had not planned anything as such of keeping the market closed. The shopkeepers themselves approached us at the last minute and requested us to inform that the market would remain closed as a mark of respect to the man who represented us.”
He said the complete shutdown was also a way of acknowledging the efforts that Manohar Parrikar put in. “He envisioned the market, planned it and also completed it, and this was the last thing we could do and pay our respects to him”, he added.
