PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji Monday resolved to request the government to devolve necessary powers for development of the area within the corporation’s jurisdiction in keeping with the provisions of the 74th amendment of the Constitution.
At its Monday meeting Mayor Surendra Furtado initiated this resolution saying that as per the Constitution, the government is supposed to devolve powers to local bodies. In the absence of these powers the CCP is not in a position to develop the city, he stated.
The mayor also criticized local MLA Manohar Parrikar, who is also the chief minister for delay in clearing the proposal for pay parking as well as not allocating any finances for the development of the city.
The mayor had written to the Chief Town Planner regarding off-street parking spaces for vehicles in Panjim and Amendment of Goa Land Development and Buildings Construction Regulation 2010.
In the letter, Furtado said that there was no action taken by the TCP on the CCP proposal and subsequent to the letters the corporation in its meeting held on July 31st had decided that since some parties who had submitted their plans for approval of commercial-cum-residential complexes to CCP have approached the High Court of Bombay at Goa and since the amendments when approved by the Government of Goa will be from prospective date, this Corporation has decided to approve the projects which are already received by this Corporation. However, henceforth new projects which will be received by the CCP shall be approved only after amendments as suggested by the Corporation to the TCP are approved by the government. The off-shore casino vehicles’ parking issue was also hotly debated.
