PANJIM: The accident in Mala, Panjim that killed a young life has exposed that the accident is a result of the unjustified eight year delay in resumption and completion of the AMRUT mission works.
The sewerage line works that are being carried out in the capital city under Smart City Mission are apparently the works that were approved under the AMRUT scheme and have been delayed by a massive eight years and have taken them up all together which has resulted in the death of one and misery for lakhs in Panjim.
The work of sewerage is like a dead body sent to us to conduct final rites because there is nothing left in that work now” he said.
The official said that the old sewerage line was overloaded, degraded and destroyed years ago. However, nobody paid any heed to this work and now it has gone completely out of hand.
“The work that Smart City mission is doing is the work that was passed under AMRUT mission and for several years everyone has just sat on this work doing nothing about it,” the official exclaimed.
The Managing Director of the Smart City Corporation did not reveal any details of the works of the sewerage line that are currently underway. However, an official on the condition of anonymity has expressed deep disgust and anguish over how the work has been delayed for the past eight years.
It may be recalled that Panjim had received Rs. 59.44 crores for the works of 2015-16 for laying the sewerage line. However, the works remained in the freezer for eight years only to be handed over to the Smart City Mission recently.
Currently, the entire city of Panjim has been dug up for sewerage line and manhole construction work. Smart City officials said that the manholes that are being built on the Manshi to Down The Road Smart Road are a complicated task to complete as they have to dig below the water level of the creek by avoiding water incursion and other factors.
