The Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) on Tuesday raided couple of shops and fish vendors in Panjim market and seized 56 kg of plastic carry bags below 40 microns as a part of Chaka-Chak campaign which commenced on January 26.
The CCP inspectors along with ex-councillor and co-ordinator of Chaka Chak campaign Patricia Pinto raided shops and fish vendors using banned plastic bags.
The CCP inspector Satish Curdikar along with Nilkant Phadte, Ramdas Shetye and Pandurang Chodankar carried out the drive. A big quantum of banned plastic bags was seized from fish vendors in the fish market however they were let off after warning.
“This being their first time they were not fined however one shop keeper was fined Rs 300 from whom 800 gms of banned carry bags were seized,” Curdikar said when contacted by Herald.
Under the law, fine of Rs 5000 can be imposed. It has been also ensured that seized carry bags are not brought into use.
“ Three labour were put on duty today to only to make whole holes into seized bags so that they are not brought into use ” told Patricia Pinto further adding that they will continue their drive to ensure that plastic bags below 40 microns are not brought into use.
