PANJIM: A couple from Mapusa died early Saturday morning when their son, who was driving the vehicle fell drowsy at the wheel resulting in the fatal accident.
The victims are identified as Jairam Mandrekar and Ratnamala Mandrekar; they were travelling in the car driven by their son when the accident occurred, opposite SBI Bank at Porvorim at around 4 am. The driver, Ankit, escaped with minor injuries.
Porvorim police inspector Vishwesh Karpe told Herald that the driver fell drowsy and as such he lost his control and dashed the car against a stationed truck. “The family was returning home at Mapusa from Khandola where they attended a festival. On their way back at around 4 am the couple’s son who was driving the car fell sleepy, losing control. The car dashed against the truck severely injuring the husband and wife. They succumbed to the injuries soon thereafter,” he informed.
Jairam was a retired officer of Mapusa Urban Bank while his wife Ratnamal was working with the same bank.
The police have registered an offense under Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of IPC.
