Parking space a major issue at Palolem beach

CANACONA: As the scenic beauty of the Palolem beach in Canacona attracts hordes of foreign and local tourists throughout the year, parking here is a nightmare.

Tourists, as well as locals find it extremely difficult to park their vehicles with the limited parking space available.

On weekends, its worse, say locals as domestic guests prefer to bring their own vehicles.

Sometimes visitors have to park their vehicles 2-3 kms away from the beach.

It may be recalled that the Canacona Municipal Council had acquired 4000 sq mts in 198 on which stands a well-equipped toilet while the rest of the area is used for parking but this too is insufficient.

“There are vast tracts of barren agricultural land in Palolem and many councils had earlier resolved to acquire 10,000 sq mts of such land for parking. However, these resolutions have not been implemented till date,” said former Canacona deputy chairperson Dayanand Pagi.

In Canacona, there are seven beaches; Pollem, Galjibag, Talpan, Patnem, Ovrem, Agonda and Khola and none of them have designated parking. This forces motorists to park their vehicles in a haphazard manner which in turn leads to traffic congestion.

“The situation is always chaotic at the Agonda beach,” said former Agonda Sarpanch Badal Naik.
