Parrikar gets ugly dose of Mapusa work culture

TEAM HERALD MAPUSA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar realized on Monday that the government workforce in Mapusa does not always share his penchant for strict discipline at work.

Parrikar paid a surprise visit to eight offices, including the police station, at Mapusa on Monday afternoon and noticed that many employees were not present at their desks.
Parrikar along with Revenue Secretary Srivastava paid surprise visits to the offices of the mamlatdar, deputy collector, town and country planning, commercial tax, civil supplies, PWD, electricity department and the Mapusa police station between 2.30 pm and 3.15 pm, when he found that many staff employees were absent from duty.
When Parrikar visited the Mamlatdar’s office, the Mamaltdar had gone out to lunch. As soon as the mamlatdar was informed about Parrikar’s visit, he returned immediately and met the chief minister.
Deputy Collector Sabaji Shetye was present in the office and interacted with the chief minister. Parrikar also noticed that some staff employees in the deputy collector’s office were not in their seats.
Parrikar also visited the offices of the Town and Country Planning, Commercial Tax and Civil Supplies in the same building as well as the PWD (water supply division) and found some staff absent from duty.
Parrikar encountered a similar situation on visiting the electricity department, but word soon spread about the chief minister’s surprise visit and some staff employees who were wandering all over the place rushed back to occupy their positions in office. Parrikar then visited the Mapusa Police station and found that Deputy Police Superintendent Mahesh Gaonker and Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar were not present in the office. He was told that both the officers had gone to the court.
There are only two police sub-inspectors in the office and Police Sub Inspector Ratnakar Kalangutkar is on sick leave, while Police Sub-Inspector Sadashiv Hansikutti had gone to the court.
None of the officers were present at the police station when the chief minister visited there. When Hunsikuttie returned, he had to face the fury of Parrikar.
It is learnt that Parrikar was annoyed when he noticed all the officers had left the police station at the same time.
