PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday held meeting with officials of Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) and it has been decided to entrust them with the task of highway cleaning.
Parrikar also reviewed progress of solid waste management plant proposed at Cacora. The financial approval for the project is expected to be granted on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, GSWMC Director and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that Chief Minister has decided to hand over highway cleaning work to GSWMC as the corporation has all the expertise to deal with garbage management.
Currently, Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is cleaning the highways.
Lobo said that Parrikar, who is Chairman of GSWMC, has been informed about the need to immediately start the Cacora plant to deal with South Goa garbage. “CM has said that the financial approval for the project will be given by tomorrow (Saturday),” he said.
He also said that currently too much of pressure is being put on Saligao garbage treatment plant and if no steps are taken now then it would be another Sonsoddo.
Lobo said that plant cannot handle more than 120 tons of garbage per day while it is currently handling 180 tons of waste.
“Stop sending us waste from Tiswadi and all those panchayats which were not empanelled to send waste to the plant,” he said.
