CALANGUTE: A number of people gathered at Baga beach to protest the construction of a 300-metre wide road behind the shacks at Saunthawaddo-Cobrawaddo border on the beach at Calangute.
It may be recalled that last week the locals brought this to the notice of the Calangute Constituency Forum who acted swiftly in the matter after finding out that the road was being constructed without any permission.
The meeting condemned the blatant violation of CRZ norms leading to the disturbance of the ecological balance by the destruction of sand dunes, beach vegetation and felling of trees in the area which protect sand erosion.
President of Calangute Constituency Forum, Premanand Divkar said,  “There was no work order in place and neither did they seek permission from GCZMA as the area comes under the CRZ.  The people have given the panchayat eight days’ time to remove the road or else will remove it forcibly. If no action is taken let us once again march to the panchayat on next Tuesday to protest against this illegality.”
