Residents of Pernem have strongly opposed the proposed
Sunburn Festival, which is likely to be hosted at Manohar International Airport
Mopa. The residents have written to the local authorities asking them not to
give permission for the festival.
Locals said that though the Government has classified it as
Festival, everybody knows that it is a party and not a festival. Locals further
said that the sunburn festival organized in the past at various parts of Goa
was a nuisance to the local public in all respects. Further, the locals said
that allowing the Sunburn Festival in the village is like inviting all the
illegalities, like drugs and alcohol.
Mopa Vimantal Panchkroshi Pidit Jana Sangtana on the behalf
of Pernam residents has written to all 5 Panchayats and the local police
station, requesting them not to give permission to Sunburn Festival. The Locals
further informed that they will be submitting memorandum regarding the same to
the Deputy Collector and the Chief Secretary of Goa Government.
Meanwhile Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that it will be
unprofitable if we shift Sunburn to Mopa as Mopa doesn’t have proper infrastructure.
He further said that the Sunburn festivals normally happens on beach so it
should happen on coastal area of North Goa or shift it to South Goa.
