Petty criminals escape Margao police dragnet in 2017

While Margao police achieved success in many major cases, they still have to pull up their socks to ensure that petty criminals do not thrive and spoil their good record

During 2017, Margao Town Police Station achieved success in detecting major crimes like murder and attempt to murder, but failed to make much headway in detecting theft cases, including housebreaking cases.
Incidentally, the major crimes registered at Margao Town Police Stations in 2017 appear to be the same as those registered in 2016 as during both years three murders, one attempt to murder and three robberies were registered and the police managed to apprehend the culprits in all these cases.
The three murder cases registered were that of Ganga Antao by her husband Joe Shepherd Antao at their residence at Sirvodem on April 8, 2017; the murder of Tony the ragpicker on August 11, at Arlem Circle by Amanulla Bepari and that of Abdul Kadar who was killed by Chotu alias Fayaz while having a drink at Shantinagar.
The lone attempt to murder occurred on October 5, when three persons namely Sadik Doddamani, Alkbar Malhakatti and Sagar Male all residents of Sirvodem kidnapped Abhilash Nagwal native of New Delhi and took him to a lonely spot and tried to kill him by strangulation. However, the victim managed to escape and survived.
In 2017, one culpable homicide not amounting to murder, four rape cases and one dacoity were registered, while in 2016 not a single of these three crimes were registered. The police detected both the kidnapping cases that were registered at the police station and the kidnapped person was rescued. While Margao police detected all the three robberies registered they could solve only 8 of the 17 housebreaking cases during the night that were registered and could not solve even the two housebreaking cases that occurred during the day.
The police could detect only 11 of the 37 vehicle thefts registered at the police station and solve one of the four house thefts registered.
Of the 17 fatal accidents registered police succeeded in detecting 15 of them while they had registered 46 cases of other accidents.
Margao Police booked 516 cases against hawkers carrying out business illegally in 2071 as against the 207 cases registered in 2016. However, they appear to have slowed down in booking gambling cases as in 2017 only 56 cases were registered as against the 61 registered in 2016.
Similarly, although there are quite a number of beggars seen in Margao, last year police booked only about one fourth the number of beggars they had booked in 2016. Police registered only 47 cases against beggars in 2017, while the previous year they had registered 170 cases.
The police have also helped in keeping the area clean as 292 cases were registered against people dumping garbage by the roadside or in open spaces.
While Margao Police booked 799 cases under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act in 2017, they also booked 636 cases against smoking and spitting in public places. Police booked 16 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act earning it the distinction of being the police station to record the highest number of such cases in South Goa.
