Photos of personalities to be re-installed in MMC hall

MARGAO, APRIL 2
There’s finally a ray of hope that the portraits of prominent personalities from the Commercial capital and outside will once again find a place in the august Margao Municipal hall.
The portraits of eminent personalities, including the first Chairperson of the Municipal Council and Margao’s first MLA, besides portraits of national leaders, including the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi once occupied prominent place inside the Municipal hall.
Sadly, the portraits and photo frames, however, were confined to the dusty store room of the Civic body in recent times in view of the renovation of the Municipal hall.
Incumbent Chairperson, Savio Coutinho now says the Council has decided to once again honour the prominent personalities by re-installing the photo-frames in the hall. The photo-frames were found lined up along the corridor of the Civic body and Coutinho says the same would be installed in the hall by next week.
Attributing the delay in re-installing the photo-frames to the fact that the contractor engaged for the renovation work maintained that this was not part of his contract, Coutinho said the installation work should hopefully commence by Monday. “After checking the contact file, we have now decided to engage a carpenter to undertake the work”, he said.
Coutinho said he had persistently taken up the matter since he assumed charge of office more than a year ago, but said no one could explain the sequence of the photo-frames on the wall. “That is one reason why we even contacted some of the retired staff to ascertain which photo-frame was installed at which part of the hall”, Coutinho added.
Incidentally, the Municipal hall renovation work was taken up more than five years ago to coincide with the centenary year of the Margao Municipal building. While Council meetings have been taken place in the hall since then, the photo-frames of the eminent personalities were apparently forgotten all these years.
