PANJIM: RTI activist Sudip Tamhankar has filed a complaint at three different police stations against eight rebel Congress MLAs for insulting religious beliefs by taking oaths at religious places ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters, Tamhankar on Tuesday said that he along with two others Egypsio D’Souza and Sayed Mehboob Kadri have filed complaints at the Panjim, Agasaim and Porvorim Police Stations against all Congress candidates for taking oath in a temple, Holy Cross Shrine and at a Dargah thereby insulting religious beliefs.

He said that it was on January 22, this year when 36 Congress candidates visited Mahalaxmi Temple, Panjim; Shrine of the Holy Cross at Bambolim and at Dargah at Alto Betim and took an oath that they will remain united.
Tamhankar said the complaint has been filed under Sections 295 A and 298 of IPC and demanded that the police should immediately register FIR and start investigations.
According to Tamhankar, Section 295A of IPC is a cognisable offence for deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs and anyone who is violating it can be punished with three years imprisonment or with a fine or with both. He said that Section 298 of IPC states that any person who is uttering, words, etc with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person can be punished with imprisonment of one year or with a fine or both.
