Herald: After making Panjim city’s roads one way, how has the traffic picture changed?
Dharmesh Angle: After making Panjim city roads one way, I have seen many good factors which includes the traffic which was in a mess now moving smoothly. Secondly, pedestrians on the road are now finding it easy to cross roads. Some places which weren’t too far away now take longer to get to and that’s the only negative aspect. But the other factors are positive and they nullify this one factor.
Herald: Besides the city, the congestion has also been seen in adjoining areas of St Inez. Are you taking any measures to solve this?
Angle: It is going to be taken care of in phases. I have just worked on the Panjim issue. I have to put my mind into this issue and it is already in the process. Traffic from St Inez junction to Caculo Mall has increased now. However, there is not other road to divert this traffic to. All these factors should be considered before drawing any traffic plan for this area. It is not that easy but I am working on it.
Herald: As there are two important hospitals and fire stations in the area, it is one of significant importance. What are your takes on it?
Angle: When more than expected traffic is coming in on the stretch, you should understand that something is wrong in the planning process. Before granting any licenses to any projects, these things should be considered. Making one-way roads is not the only solution.
Herald: Have you notified any no parking zone in the area so that traffic can be controlled?
Angle: We have already notified some places next to the fire station as no parking areas and the rest is in process.
Herald: There was some sort of restriction on the cars which are being parked in no parking zones and beside the road which makes it difficult for the smooth flow of traffic. Also, traffic police were clamping vehicles. What happened to that?
Angle: We have been doing it with the help of the Corporation of the City of Panjim who were assisting us by giving us vehicles and labor. Even the lifting of vehicles was with the help of the CCP but it has now temporarily stopped. I am in touch with CCP officials for necessary help.
