PANJIM: Demanding a complete ban on plastic bags in the State, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has said that the integrated solid waste management facility at Saligao is turning out a failure due to the increasing load of plastic waste.
Addressing the media, AAP leader Dean D’Cruz said that as a member of the High Court appointed Monitoring Committee he had been visiting the Saligao plant and found that the plant was not working to its capacity.
“Also the 55,000 metric tonnes of waste lying at the site at the start of the plant is still left untreated with additional inert materials getting dumped thereupon and huge quantity of organic waste remaining untreated,” he said.
D’Cruz suggested that in order to save the situation, not only at the Saligao Treatment Plant but across Goa which had become a dump yard of garbage, the government should immediately ban plastic.
He alleged that the idea of the government to increase the intake capacity of the plant from the present 100 metric tonnes to 200 metric tonnes will further spell disaster to Saligao and surrounding areas.
