PANJIM: A police driver has been taken into custody for allegedly raping an underage student and forcing an abortion after learning about her pregnancy.
Manjunath Koli, attached with MT Section of Goa Police, is arrested and remanded to seven days of police custody based on a complaint filed by the teenager’s mother at Women Police Station.
Sources told Herald that the man, allegedly forced the victim, aged 15 years, to have an illicit relationship with him. She then turned pregnant and on learning about her pregnancy, the alleged accused forced her to get an abortion.
“When her mother learnt about the illicit relationship and the pregnancy, she approached the Women’s PS with a complaint against the policeman,” the source said.
The victim and alleged accused families are not known to each other. However, they live in the same vicinity, the complainant woman said.
The police have registered an FIR for rape and getting an abortion of the unborn under the Indian Penal Code, and relevant Sections of the Goa Children’s Act and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences.
While his suspension was not known until late Friday evening, sources said, the department will take disciplinary action against him while investigation is underway at the same time.
