PANJIM: As the row over Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film “Padmaavat” intensified is some parts of the country ahead of the film’s release, Goa Police will be keeping a watch over the situation in Goa though there are no indications of any law and order problems.
“Taking a cue (from violent protests in other states), we are alive to the situation. We are keeping a watch over the happenings in Goa. As of now, there is no indication of any problem over the movie’s release in Goa,” Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh told Herald on the eve of the movie’s country-wide release.
Police sources told Herald that cinema halls and multiplexes have been asked to approach the Police Department to deploy armed security as a precautionary measure. “As enforcement agency we are always prepared to handle the situation,” the officer said.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had earlier this month said that government would not interfere if the makers get a certificate from the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC). “If the filmmaker gets a censor certificate, then in principle, I have no objection to it but I will definitely check if there is something going to be wrong on law and order front,” he had said before the movie got a fresh screening date.
On the possibility of a law and order situation after the release of the movie, Parrikar had said that if there is any apprehension, the government has to step in as a temporary measure.
