PANJIM: Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh on Saturday said it was painful that human beings, especially women and children, are treated as commodities and traded in the market.
Singh was delivering the keynote address at a seminar organised by Goa Police on human trafficking to sensitise its field police officers, prosecutors and executive magistrates.
The talks were delivered by prominent speakers including Dr PM Nair (IPS Retd) and currently professor with Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Ravi Kant, an advocate of Supreme Court and President of Shakti Vahini, Arun Pandey founder member of Anyaya Rahit Zindagi and Bhuwan Ribhu, one of India’s foremost advocate on anti-trafficking and protection of child rights.
Nair dwelt at length on the law related to anti-human trafficking and cited cases wherein successful rescue operations were launched and convictions obtained. He also shared several practical tips on how to prosecute the violators and suggested that judicial collegiums be held on the subject.
Kant spoke on investigation of human trafficking cases and inter-state collaboration and victim support of human trafficking cases. Significantly, the chain of offences related to trafficking in human beings, especially women and children, spans across States and require pain staking investigation to break the nexus between supplier, transporter and trafficker.
Similarly, an elaborate presentation was made by Ribhu on trafficking laws and court judgments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on rescue and rehabilitation.
Thereafter, Pandey spoke on trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation with special reference to the situation in Goa. He dwelt at length on service providers & challenges involved in identification and prosecution thereof.
In his valedictory address Kashyap expressed that the take away from the seminar would definitely help the police, magistrates and prosecutors to effectively target the menace of human trafficking.

Calangute police entertain senior citizens, children for ganesh
CALANGUTE: Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi organised programmes and events for the senior citizens, children and other residents in the Calangute jurisdiction on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. Various programmes such as a musical night, drawing competition, karokae singing competition, rangoli competition, orchestra function and the satyanarayan pooja followed by mahaprasad was held between September 18 and 21. For the first time, the staff of Calangute police station organised a special programme for the senior citizens during Ganesh festival. This function was attended by over 250 senior citizens who were provided with transportation as well.
