MARGAO: Superintendent of Police (Immigration) Tony Fernandes on Tuesday asserted that Goans taking Portuguese passport in Goa are mandated by law to register with the state police authorities within 14 days.
During an informal chat with newsmen, SP Tony pointed out that those who fail to register themselves with the authorities after taking the Portuguese passport in Goa are liable to pay a fine.
“This provision is applicable only to those Goans who take their Portuguese passports in Goa. As per law, they are required to register themselves with the state authorities 14 days after receiving the passports. If not, they are liable to pay a fine”, he said, adding, “after registration, the Goan Portuguese passport holders are then granted residential permits after seeking NOCs from taluka Mamlatdars and the Chief Electoral Office”.
To a question, he said his office regularly despatches a list of persons, who have obtained Portuguese passports, for deletion of their names from the electoral rolls. “This is an ongoing process and the names for deletion are sent to the Chief Electoral Office from time to time”, he added.
