Porvorim TIrate residents from Porvorim led by local MLA Rohan Khaunte marched to the PWD office in Porvorim, where they held a protest and demanded an immediate solution on the water scarcity issue. A heavy police force was deployed at the site of their protests.
People carried empty vessels, to show how the taps have run completely dry in their constituency, forcing them to buy water from private tankers at the cost of Rs 800-900. Residents claimed that from the last year and a half, they have been facing these issues with water scarcity. They demanded to meet the Chief Engineer to hand over an ultimatum to solve the water issue within seven days.
Residents also added that they have not been receiving a single drop of water in the last few days.
Khaunte alleged that the influential tanker mafia is the reason behind artificial shortage of water to Porvorim constituency.
“While taps run dry, there is wastage of water at a few points due to breakage of the pipeline. The lower rank staff complains that there is no vehicle provided to them by the department. I even approached PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar, last week seeking his attention towards this issue but have not received any response”, Khaunte added.
“The Chief Engineer has assured to fix the issue within seven days failing, which all the local representatives will walk to PWD Porvorim to lock the office”, Khanute asserted.
Meanwhile, Khaunte said they will continue protests outside the Chief Minister’s residence and Superintendent of Police’s (SP) office, demanding action against the Porvorim Police Inspector (PI) and constable deployed at the protest site, who allegedly pushed women in the crowd.
Later in the day, around 20 of these women filed a complaint with the SP against Porvorim PI Ninad Deulkar and a male constable for hitting and violently pushing them and have called for immediate action.
“They came with full strength and hit us. They pushed us with lathis and their bare hands”, they said.
