MARGAO: Even as the commercial capital was hit by pre-monsoon on Monday evening, Margao Municipal Council’s pre-monsoon work is yet to take off in a big way till date.
In fact, Herald inquiries have revealed that the Civic body has issued work order to the contractor to take up the de-silting work only on Tuesday. The work includes de-silting all storm water drains running across the 20 municipal wards.
Two separate tenders, each amounting to Rs 4.76 lakh have been issued by the Civic body to take up the work, even as questions are raised whether the late floating of the tender will affect the work with monsoons just round the corner.
MMC Chief Officer, Y B Tawde, however, said that the Civic body has taken up the de-stilting work of major nullahs with the help of the Water Resources Department. “The Civic body has already taken up the work of de-silting of major nullahs. Work will continue in the next few days to complete the project,” he said.
However. when Herald inquired with the Municipal technical section on Tuesday on the status of the de-silting work, Acting Municipal Engineer Vinay Desai informed that the contractor, who has bagged the two contracts, has collected the work orders only on Thursday.
Sources said the contractor was called by the Municipal officials on Thursday and was handed over the list of drains to be taken on priority.
