AMBELIM: With the monsoons fast approaching, the pre-monsoon works have commenced in some of Salcete’s rural and coastal villages.
Former Colva sarpanch Anthony ‘Mam’ Fernandes disclosed, “The panchayat has sanctioned Rs 25,000 in each ward to the concerned ward members who will initiate the works. Presently, ward no 4 panch member Domingos has commenced cleaning the drainages in his ward.”

Assolna sarpanch Xavier Almeida said, “We have already started. It is done ward wise by each respective member. I have already finished my ward.”
Ambelim sarpanch Denica Correia said, “We have advised the ward members to start cleaning the drains.”
“Regarding the pre-monsoon preparedness, the panchayat has already started the work of clearing all the drainages and nullahs. We are still waiting for the follow-up from the Benaulim MLA office for the various lists we had submitted for desilting of ponds and nullahs through the Water Resources Department (WRD). People will be encouraged to identify and report to us the dangerous trees and branches for suitable action through a special meeting for action under Section 76 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act,” said Carmona sarpanch Allwyn Jorge.
“The electricity department has also been advised to initiate the pre-monsoon works of trimming branches and palm tree leaves touching electric wires. Major nullahs responsible for draining the water to River Sal are blocked due to silt and thick growth of weeds. The list had been submitted to the WRD through the local MLA Churchill Alemao. This work of desilting ponds and nullahs has to be done by WRD as it requires heavy machinery and extra funds,” added Jorge.
Velim sarpanch Savio D’Silva, Varca sarpanch Crosly Charlton Lourenco, and Cavelossim sarpanch Dionizio ‘Denis’ Dias, too, claimed to have commenced the pre-monsoon works.
