Mapusa
The Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, Ryan Braganza stated that the election model code of conduct will not hamper the pre-monsoon works in Mapusa as the work order for the same has already been issued.
On Wednesday, the MMC Chief told Herald that works to the tune of Rs 43 lakh such as trimming of trees, cleaning of drains and nullahs and other minor work will be carried out in the jurisdiction.
“Pre-monsoon works is already underway in some areas of Mapusa. The municipality has got into gear early this year to prepare for the monsoons. The desilting of gutters and nullahs across wards and in the market area will be completed by the end of May. The desilting of the municipal drains will be done by the municipality, while the cleaning of the major nullahs will be taken up through the WRD,” said Ryan.
One can recall that during the monsoons of 2016 and 2017, there was flooding and heavy water-logging in and around the Mapusa market area. Locals had even claimed that the flooding had turned the entire market into a pond, leaving buyers and sellers with no option but to negotiate their way through knee-deep water. Hence this year, the Mapusa municipality is racing ahead of time to be ready for the monsoons.
