Pristine Sattari waterfalls losing charm due to garbage menace

SATTARI: Managing garbage and plastic waste at the famous waterfalls in State has become the biggest challenge during monsoons. 

In Sattari, there are around 13 plus mesmerising waterfalls, which attracts thousands of locals and tourists, with  most of them leaving behind plastic waste and empty bottles in the forest areas as their footprint. All these waterfalls are located in Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and are active in the monsoon.

“The beautiful waterfalls of Sattari and pristine places namely Saleli, Keri, Morlem, Kopardem, Pali, Charavanem, Hivrem, Surla, Nanoda, Sirguli, Bambar, Satrem, Brahmakarmali, Shelpe, Chorla Ghat, Dabem beside others are gradually turning dangerous for nature lovers and families due to alcohol, plastic waste and nuisance,” say the locals.

“This monsoon there was a total ban on people visiting the waterfalls due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite orders by Deputy Collector of Valpoi people still visit these waterfalls thereby making nuisance,” say the villagers.

“Now the picnickers are throwing garbage and plastic everywhere in the forest area, breaking empty alcohol bottles near the waterfalls and making a nuisance,” the villagers informed.

The panchayat along with the villagers have complained and urged the concern authorities to take strict action against those visiting the waterfalls and making nuisance in these pandemic times.

They have also demanded with the Valpoi Police Station to depute police personnel at every waterfall and stop entry for outsiders.
