A person was injured, while six houses and two four-wheelers were damaged, after gusty winds hit Tariwado-Adpai in Durbhat-Agapur panchayat area, Ponda, on Wednesday at about 11.30 am.
Villagers have claimed that they have never witnessed such kind of activity in the locality.
Gusty winds that lasted for a few minutes uprooted trees damaging houses and vehicles. One senior citizen, Vinayak Naik, was lucky to escape with minor injuries, after a tree came crashing down on him. Eyewitness said Naik was trapped in between a electricity pole and the tree.
A house belonging to Santosh Naik was severely damaged, after a huge mango tree branch fell on his house, damaging entire roofing. Luckily, no one was hurt, as the occupants made it to safety.
“I was washing my vehicle when suddenly tree behind our house came crashing down. A huge branch fell on our house and damaged entire roofing. My mother and children rushed out of the house and were lucky to have escaped unhurt,” said the house owner Santosh Naik.
Electricity and telephone supply was also hit in the area due to the incident.
Ponda fire station personnel rushed to the site and cleared trees that had fallen on houses and roads. Traffic movement was also affected in the area.
The area has several huge trees and according to the villagers, they had told owners to cut those trees as it was posing danger to life and property.
“We have been requesting owner of those trees that are posing danger, but nothing has been done. Even villagers don’t want to sign the letter through which we can request the district administration to cut the trees. These trees are very old and huge, gusty winds can bring them down,” said Kashinath Mule.
