ACB registered the offence on Tuesday under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. ACB has already written to the DGP to initiate a disciplinary inquiry against Naik.
According to ACB officials Naik was investigating a case against Shiroda resident Agnelo Fernandes who was accused of assaulting his own wife. Fernandes was absconding after committing the crime.
Investigating Officer Vikram Naik who was chasing Fernandes received information that Fernandes was in contact with Nelson Antao on a regular basis. Naik called Antao and asked him to help arrest Fernandes and accordingly Antao helped in the arrest.
After that Naik started demanding Rs 35,000 from Antao and threatened to arrest him, if he didn’t cough up the amount, for sheltering Fernandes. Naik started calling Antao regularly on the phone with his demand.
Antao, then, filed a complaint with ACB. Based on audio recordings of Naik demanding money and after verifying this ACB registered an FIR. ACB also requested the DGP to hand over the Fernandes case investigation to some other officer. DySP Bossuet Silva is investigating the case.
