MAPUSA: In a relief to the passers-by and locals, the Siolim- Marna panchayat cleared the garbage littered along the Siolim-Mapusa road.
A regular passer-by, Larsen informed Herald that for a while the Siolim- Mapusa route was littered with garbage that was emitting a foul smell.
“The road width was reduced to half due to the garbage lying all along the road. I am a regular traveller on this route. Due to the intervention of the Goa Human Rights Commission this road was cleared in January this year. Now, the road is cleaner than before but the people don’t seem to understand. Several times I notice people flinging their bags full of garbage on the road. The callous attitude of the citizens who dump their garbage there, needs to be changed,” said Larsen.
Govekar, another local said the panchayat is doing its bit but the people are irresponsible and continue to dump their waste.
“Last year, the panchayat cleared around 15 truckloads of garbage from this stretch. Hopefully the citizens stop dumping their garbage or else it will become the same way it was earlier. We do not want the road to be strewn with tonnes of garbage,” he said.
It may be recalled that tonnes of garbage had accumulated along the Housing Board, Mapusa to Marna- Siolim road.
The panchayat had cleared the road to discourage more people from throwing their waste. Locals want to create awareness so the road leading to the village remains clean and green.
