CURCHOREM: Stating that the Quepem Carnival Committee has been organising the Carnival festival under the banner of ‘Navyug Vikas Manch (NVM) Quepem’ for 13 years without any government funds, Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar said the NVM will also conduct the 14th Carnival festival without any support or help from the government.
“Since the last 13 years, we have been organizing the festival on our own with the support of well-wishers for the benefit of people from Quepem and surrounding areas, as all the people cannot afford to travel to Panjim, Margao or Vasco,” said Kavlekar, who is also the NVM chairman.
Briefing on details of the programme to be organised this year, he said the Carnival floats parade will be held on March 4 and Khell Tiatr will be staged in various wards of Quepem constituency on March 1, 2 and 3 besides a Khell Tiatr Mahatshov will be organized where various khell tiatrs will be staged at Quepem Municipal garden stage and prizes will be given for best play, best direction, etc.
Organising Committee President Caitani (Cathy) Fernandes said a screening committee has been appointed under former QMC chairperson Rahul Pereira to select floats.
She informed that prizes equivalent to Panjim/Margao floats will be awarded to floats and will try to get best and maximum floats to Quepem and will ensure that no floats will be allowed with vulgarity display.
Other committee members are Camilo Simoes and Effie Pereira (vice-presidents), Evangelisto D’Costa (organising secretary), Paulo Fernandes (joint secretary), Alleluia Afonso (treasurer) and Gladys Mascarenhas (assistant treasurer).
