PANJIM: A Quepem resident was awarded life imprisonment and slapped with fine of Rs 2 lakh by the Children’s Court for raping an underage girl, the daughter of his live-in partner. The girl’s mother has also been sentenced to life in jail for abetting the rapist.
The man and the woman were asked to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life with the court terming it a ‘ grave offence.’
As per the chargesheet, the victim, who was aged around 16 years, was forced to share the bed with the accused, who were in a relationship after the woman’s husband’s death. The minor was sexually assaulted and tortured from May 2010 to January 2011 with her mother as abettor. The victim’s younger brother too was assaulted whenever he tried to stop the atrocities against his sister
It was only after the girl discussed the ordeal with one of her teachers that a police complaint was filed, and the couple was booked and arrested for offences under the IPC and Goa Children’s Act.
In another case, a 62-year-old grandmother has been sentenced to imprisonment till the rising of the court and fine of Rs 1 lakh for threatening her granddaughter. The Bicholim resident has beeen asked to undergo 10 days simple imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine.
