Questions raised over secret ballot

MARGAO: Voters in Salcete on Wednesday raised many an eyebrow over the serial numbers on the ballot papers, fearing that the system infringes on the right to secrecy.

MARGAO:  Voters in Salcete on Wednesday raised many an eyebrow over the serial numbers on the ballot papers, fearing that the system infringes on the right to secrecy.
A voter from Sucaldem-Chinchinim Frank Viegas raised his reservation with the presiding officer Raju Magdum in booth no 9 housed at the Sucaldem Youth Club House, Chinchinim, on the numbering of ballot papers.
“Since the BJP government is ruling the state, the local ruling MLA will have access to the ballot papers. This seriously violates secrecy of the voters”, he said.
The presiding officer expressed his helplessness on the issue and asked Viegas to take up the matter with the Election authorities.
Dramapur-Sirlim Sarpanch Domnick Noronha also raised his objection, saying the election authorities should immediately come out with an explanation on the issue.
