Raia asks Margao to return 30,000 sq mts of land

MARGAO: The adjourned Raia Gram sabha from last Sunday was held on August 23, at the panchayat where a total of five resolutions were passed including a demand for the handing back of 30,000 square meters of land from the Margao Municipal Council to the panchayat.

The villagers were concerned with the pollution and waste that could be generated from the planned project on the land currently in possession with the MMC and how the village are worried that the catchment area will get polluted. The land had been acquired for the setting up of a garage and other facilities in Sonsoddo are that falls under the jurisdiction of the Raia pancahayat.
Earlier about an hour went in discussion about the proposed Ammonia plant that the villagers are opposing and they have demanded that the pancahyat initiates action against Govind Poi Factory. The panchayat informed the locals that a show cause notice had already been sent and they are awaiting a reply within the next two days and will be taking appropriate action.
The issues of the road safety management was also taken up in view of the umpteen number of accidents and the gram sabha resolved to write to the district collector to put up the speedbrakers as per the recommendations of the pancahyats.  The pancahyat has for a long time now taken up this matter with the authorities and have persistently requested for speedbreakers at strategic locations on the road to prevent accidents from taking place.
The gram sabha has also decided to write to the electricity department regarding their grievances with the expensive and high power bills.  Furthermore the pancahyat resolved to submit to the block development office the names of the newly formed village development committees which will help them avail central government funds.
