MARGAO: Principal District and Session Judge South Goa Irshad Agha on Friday sentenced former sarpanch of Raia Esmeralda Fernandes e Gomes for committing an offence under Section 3 (1) of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The court sentenced Esmeralda to undergo six months imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 25,000. The court later suspended the sentence to one month for preferring appeal in the case.
According to Maina-Curtorim police, an offence was registered against former sarpanch of Village Panchayat Raia under the Act after a complaint was lodged by one Anthony Barbosa against Esmeralda.
