The gram sabha of Raia Panchayat on Sunday has opposed any plans to set up a kabrastan in the Manora area of the village.
The resolution was passed after the members raised apprehensions that the burial ground may be set up in Manora.
At the meeting held on Sunday, the gram sabha demanded that the Sarpanch comply with the rules and regulations of the gram sabha meeting rules.
A gram sabha member Xavier Fernandes stated that the sarpanch often tells the members that they can get the replies to their queries in the Panchayat office, and reminded Sarpanch Savio Gomes that gram sabha resolutions cannot be taken in the office but at the gram sabha meeting.
He also charged the sarpanch for the delay in holding the gram sabha meeting and demanded that the gram sabha rules and regulations be followed in letter and spirit.
The meeting also discussed on the plying of sand carrying trucks from Sonsodo to Tembi, causing traffic bottlenecks on the village roads. The meeting also discussed the issue of saline water accumulated in the fields, rendering the fields useless for vegetable cultivation.
The gram sabha members also called for reduction in the number of accidents on the State highway by erecting signages, speed breakers and bus bays.
The sensitive issue of garbage disposal also figured at the Sunday meeting. While members called for a stop to issuance of licenses for construction projects as per the High Court order, Sarpanch Savio Gomes insisted on the court orders before taking a decision on the matter.
He told the gram sabha members that the Panchayat can stop the issuance of construction licence only upon directives from the Director of Panchayats.
Gomes further told the gram sabha that building and construction files now come directly from the Town and Country Planning Department and cleared by appointed engineers.
“If any project has the licence from the TCP, I cannot stop them. Until and unless the Panchayat receives the order from the Panchayat Director, licences cannot be stopped”, he added.
The Sarpanch assured to release the excess waters from the fields, saying the bhandara is full of water due to the recent rains.
Meanwhile, the gram sabha passed a resolution congratulating Anthony Pango for being elected a member of the Goa Football Association for the third time.
